Through a competitive tendering process Silulumanzi was awarded a 30-year concession to operate and maintain the water and wastewater services for Mbombela Local Municipality within the concession area. The Concession area can roughly be defined as the urban areas on Nelspruit, most of south Nsikazi including KaNyamazane and the Peri-Urban areas up to the Clau-Clau river. It also include the populated areas of Matsulu.

In 2009, Silulumanzi celebrated the 10th year of operations during which the company was awarded Blue Drop and Green drop status. These independently verified prestidiuos awards were awarded for excellence in water and wastewater quality. The company is also proud to have been accredited with the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 18001 systems. These accreditations confirm excellence in Quality Control, Environmental Management and Health and Safety. The Lowveld Chamber of Commerce and Tourism nominated Silulumanzi as a finalist in the environmental category for the 2009 annual business awards.

In terms of its concession contract, the company is obligated to render services against a set of Key Performance Indicators. The KPI’s range from technical issues such as water quality, to matters related to BBBEE, staff development and corporate social responsibility. The annual Silulumanzi Cup High Schools soccer and netball tournament fully sponsored by the company, is an example of the latter.

The company has a philosophy to be close to its customers and therefore it operates 4 modern customer offices in Nelspruit, KaNyamazane, Msogwaba and Matsulu. An independent annual customer satisfaction survey is conducted to measure performance. Recent independent studies has shown that Silulumanzi’s tariffs are very competitive compared with other similar cities in South Africa.
