Hospice Philosophy
The vision of the society is to provide holistic treatment to terminally ill patients for whom no cure is available. Treatment is aimed at support and tender care of the patients by palliative nursing targeted at pain and symptom control. Everybody has the right to die with dignity in a caring environment.
Hospice affirms life and recognises dying as a normal process. We neither hasten nor postpone death, but exist in the belief that with proper care and the promotion of a caring community, patients and families will be free to attain a satisfactory degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death.
The aim is not to treat chronic disorders as such, but to provide short-term care in the last life phases of people with terminal illnesses. The majority of patients are cared for in their own homes where the family becomes the unit of care.
The Programme
It is a medically directed, nurse co-ordinated programme of care, responding to the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of the patient, family and appropriate others.
It extends well into the bereavement period after the death of the patient, providing support to those who were left behind.
An experienced, specially-trained nursing sister assesses the patient and makes a commitment to be accessible whenever the need arises, visiting the patient on a regular basis at home and providing physical care, practical help and emotional support.
Professionally trained nursing staff, provide home care for terminally ill patients, assisted by volunteers from the community who provide care and support to patients and their families
Volunteers can assist by reading to patients, doing shopping, helping with sanitary care, as well as assisting family members/care givers, by providing them with occasional opportunities for their own time of relaxation and rest.
Hospice is a non-profit organization and solely reliant on the goodwill and donations form the community, patients and families at large.
‘You matter because you are,
You matter to the last moment of your life,
And we will do all that we can
Not only to help you die peacefully,
But to live fully until you die’
