10-Year Driving Licences Not yet in effect
The Dept of Transport has now officially called for public input on Gazetted draft amendments to the National Road Traffic Regulations, proposing to extend driving licence card validity for light vehicles and motorcycles from 5 years to 10 years. Please have your say in the link below, but before you do, consider the following:
POSITIVE POINTS
Less Bureaucracy and shorter queues, reducing administrative transactions by roughly 50%, significantly freeing up capacity; Cost and Time Savings as you will pay only for card renewal fees and take less time off from work; International Alignment brings SA in line with global best practices across developed countries; Licence Permanence Clarified—the proposed act explicitly confirm that a licence is indefinite unless revoked.
CONCERNS
An expired card is to remain temporarily valid for a maximum of 3 months after applying for a renewal, if the state takes longer than 90 days to issue your card, you risk being penalised on the road (state this concern in your response);
Visual acuity can change significantly over a decade and critics argue that road safety can be compromised. Follow the link below to have your say.
