Taxi Association Patrollers have NO right to stop motorists / tour operators
Taxi Association Patrollers or security personnel affiliated to Taxi Associations have NO RIGHT to stop motorists on public roads, whether you are giving someone a lift or not. A while ago the National Commissioner of SAPS issued a statement with a stern warning to confirm that:
They can patrol their taxis, not you as motorist / tour operator;
Harassment and coercion into making financial payments constitutes financial extortion and other related criminal offenses;
Confiscating keys and holding motorists hostage are serious crimes that will not be tolerated.
WHAT TO DO IF VICTIMIZED
Report incidents to SAPS;
Press criminal charges against perpetrators (this is very important);
Law enforcement agencies will take decisive action to stamp out these crimes.
ZERO TOLERANCE
General Masemola (at the time) has pledged to task all Provincial Commissioners to adopt a zero-tolerance approach in dealing with these acts of crime.
