Your voice made a difference…

You recently had your say on the draft proposal by SABC to licence all streaming devices. Well, there has been movement on the matter.

Due to pressure from you and 37,828 DearSA participants, the government has decided to exclude smartphones from the draft regulations. A win indeed.

However, we should not stop here as some of the devices that are still being considered include;

  • Laptops;
  • Tablets;
  • IPTV;
  • Internet;
  • Decoders;
  • Set-top boxes.

The SABC still require subscribers of on-demand streaming services like Netflix, Youtube, and Showmax to pay a special household levy (similar to a TV license) for owning electronic devices — other than smartphones.

DearSA will keep a close eye on the SABC proposal and will inform you of further developments.
