Profile
Only 1% of the population donates blood and the demand for this precious liquid is constantly increasing.
SANBS tries to make the process of giving blood as convenient as possible to the public. Often the SANBS donor centre is situated inconveniently or the times are not suitable for the public to make the trip.
We want to bring blood donation to the people and we can’t do this by ourselves.
SANBS would like your help to arrange a blood drive at your business/school/community to bring blood donation to your colleagues and employees.
A blood drive can create an excellent team building opportunity for your staff. The different departments can compete against one another to see which department saves the most lives. Not only can a blood drive boost staff morale but it also helps to educate them about leading a safe lifestyle.
To be a blood donor a person must meet the following criteria:
- Be between the ages of 16 and 65
- Weigh more than 50kgs
- Eat a meal or a snack before donating
- Be in general good health
- Lead a SAFE sexual lifestyle
What will SANBS require from you?
- An area which is easily accessible to all staff and which will be convenient for everyone to attend
- A proposed date and time for the event
- Communicate and encourage your colleagues to attend the blood drive
What will SANBS provide?
- A full mobile team will all equipment required to operate a blood drive
- All posters and marketing material
- Advisory support
- Every donor gets a mini medical check up prior to donating blood.
- Phlebotomy and medical support to all donors.
Please note that a blood drive is not an HIV testing centre and that all the donated blood goes for testing in Johannesburg and Durban. Thus we encourage all potential donors to only donate if they know that they lead a safe lifestyle and that they are healthy.
