Must do hiking trails in the Kruger Lowveld

The Kruger Lowveld is certain to bring you back to nature. Boasting beautiful landscapes, challenging valleys and mystical forests, this is the ideal hiking destination. Hiking in the Kruger Lowveld is a welcome escape and gives one a greater appreciation for our fascinating ecosystem.

Bakkrans Hiking Trail, Sudwala area– This trail can be found after turning onto the Sabie/Sudwala turnoff (R539) from the N4. The road becomes a dirt and after 10 km turn right at the Uitsoek hut sign. Keeping on this road will lead you to the plantations. The trail starts and ends at the Uitsoek hut. This 11km moderately difficult trail can be undertaken by anyone of any age with some level of fitness. A hiking permit is required.

Forest Falls Day Trail, Sabie– Located just outside the town of Sabie on the road to Graskop, this 4.5km circular route begins and ends at the Green Heritage Picnic Site. A permit is required for this walk and be obtained from the Forestry Museum in Sabie.

Queen Rose Hiking Trail, near Barberton- Initially a two-day trail, but can also be done as a challenging one-day 14km circular trail. This trail is arguably one of the most scenic in South Africa and is amazing to experience!

The Kadashi-Tufa Trail– An easy 2km hike that runs along the Kadishi River. The trail starts at Blyde Canyon, A Forever Resort is located on the R532, 50km from the town of Graskop. An entrance fee is payable and a map is provided.

The Loerie Trail– A 14km highly popular trail due its challenging nature and wondrous view of the Sabie River Valley along the trail. This circular day trail starts at Merry Pebbles and has Bridal Veil Falls and Glynis and Elna Falls located on the route. A hiking permit is required.

Secretary Bird Day TrailLocated 13 km from Sabie on the R532 road to Graskop, this 3km trail starts and ends at Mac Mac Pools. An entrance fee is payable at Mac Mac Pools gate.
