Profile
Imagine that. A childhood so deprived of reading pleasure and the universe of imagination stirred by the written word that these A5 sized readers are the first entry to this magic world many children have.
Books in Homes is a non – profit organisation whose vision is a literate South Africa. Their mission is to produce affordable books and classroom aids which will help to make this vision a reality.
Through many years of working in rural areas, Val Morris identified the need for appropriate reading and teaching material for schools and children who have little or no access to such resources. She developed storybooks and charts for the classroom use, from pre-school to senior primary level and beyond.
These A5 size readers, known as Gogo’s books, aim to make reading fun. They have bright covers and large easy-to-read text, and are illustrated with line drawings that can be coloured in. The text of these books is relevant to their experience for example Snow White and the seven dwarfs become Black Beauty and the seven orphans; Goldilocks and the three bears become Thoko and the three Lions. This makes Books in Homes unique.
The books are available in seven of our official languages. The opportunity to step out of reality for a while and find comfort, knowledge and pleasure between the pages of a book is something so many take for granted. Donor support helps to make these books affordable and available to the underprivileged, so if you are able to share some of this magic, do get in touch with Val.
