Urgent Scam Alert – Emails from SARS

The fraudster sends a ‘spoofed’ email that are made to look as if they were send from SARS enticing unsuspecting taxpayers to give out their personal information such as bank account details and some passwords, sometimes claiming that you will receive a refund and  others demanding an immediate payment with some serious           consequences if you do not pay.  Examples include very real looking addresses such as returns@sars.co.za or refunds@sars.co.za

Do not open or respond to emails from unknown sources

Beware of emails that ask for personal, tax, banking and efiling details

SARS will NEVER request your banking details in any communication

For the purpose of telephonic engagement and authentication        processes SARS will verify your personal details.

SARS will NEVER send you and hyperlinks to sites, even bank sites

Beware of false SMSs, SARS will not send .htm or .html attachments

SARS will NEVER ask for your card details.

If in doubt, log into your e-filing directly from the SARS website and check for correspondence in your inbox there, or call the call centre.
