Mandatory income tax numbers for 2026 employer filing season:

Employers will not be able to submit PAYE reconciliations without valid   Income Tax Reference Numbers for employees who are required to register in terms of the Income Tax Act.  Previously, missing numbers triggered warnings in e-Filing, allowing time for corrections. This grace period ends with the 2026 season.  From now on the reconciliations will be rejected and non-compliance will result in administrative penalties.

How employees can register themselves for tax:

SARS eFiling—Online self-registration available on this platform, or send a Whatsapp to 0800 11 7277 saying “Hi”. These are the easiest options.

Minimum wage increase this month:

The national minimum wage is R30,23 for each ordinary hour worked,    effective 1 March 2026, including farm workers and domestic workers.

Fraudulent email currently circulating, impersonates SARS

These emails often claim there is an outstanding tax payment or settlement due and request payment using the banking details provided.  These are scams designed to mislead taxpayers into making payments or disclosing personal information.  DO NOT:

Make any payments based on unexpected SARS emails, check on e-filing for official correspondence and only use legitimate portals to pay.

Do not click on links or download attachments contained in suspicious mails

Do not provide personal, tax or banking information in response to such.

If unsure, rather forward the email to your auditor or to KLCBT to verify.
