Plan initiated to change street names

The council of City of Mbombela approved the idea in principle, to change several street names and names of some townships in Mbombela, White River, Hazyview and Barberton.  This is however the very beginning of the process.  The public (you) have to exercise your right to object against all of it or some of it, or you can present proposals of what the names should be.  At KLCBT, we are hugely concerned about the cost      implications for the City, while our municipality is currently insolvent.  We urge you to engage in the     process and not wait until it is too late.  Council will only consider the costs once they had feedback from the public on how many changes should be made.  Please e-mail objections / proposals to                       cebisile.khoza@mbombela.gov.za today!

Your voice counts.

Dear Mr/s Khoza

OBJECTION TO THE RENAMING OF GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES AND STREETS IN MBOMBELA, WHITE RIVER, HAZYVIEW AND BARBERTON

KLCBT represents approximately 1300 businesses within the borders of City of Mbombela Local Municipality.

It is our resolve to object to the naming of a township and renaming of streets that was proposed in terms of council resolutions A(14), A(15), A(16), A(17) and A(18) of 28 February 2022.

The reason for the objection is that we question that City of Mbombela is in a financial position to afford such, while basic service delivery is lacking, the electricity grid is failing and creditor accounts, including Eskom, are far in arrears.

The second reason is that cost implications for businesses in the affected areas.  The cost of changing registrations, letterheads, stationery, marketing material like brochures and business cards, name boards and much more will have to be carried by businesses.  Most businesses are small and still not beginning to recover from the economic impact of Covid-19 since lockdown.

It is the duty of the City to enable economic recovery for the rate payers and the City coffers, not to put more spanners in the works.

We propose and appeal to Council to withdraw the resolution, at least until such time as we have full economic recovery and the City’s finances are in a solvent and sound state.

CONCENT TO NAMING OF STREETS

While we object to the re-naming of Pienaar and the streets in Mbombela, White River, Hazyview and Barberton, we give consent to the naming of new streets in Ward 18 as well as Safubi Road in West Acres, as proposed.

Thank you.
