Mpumalanga declared a disaster area – what can we do?

Special Attache for Tourism Development and Transformation, Mr Oupa Pilane shared a insightful piece on social media during the week and the key take away from that is the way forward which is a call to action for all:

Expedited damage assessments and recovery funding for affected          attractions and businesses—this is where KLCBT will be involved in every committee and every report to ensure this happens as soon as possible.  What you can do is to assist with information when we are asking for it—   fill in the surveys, every bit of information will assist;

Targeted support packages for SMMEs (in tourism) – This will come as the disaster funds unfold.  This is why the minister is requesting information   (as shared in yesterday’s Blitz).  Please submit.  We will keep sharing           opportunities and requests as we receive them.

Coordinated marketing efforts to rebuild visitor confidence once safety is assured.  This we can all do already.  “Mpumalanga’s natural wonders, from Blyde River Canyon to our world-class wildlife reserves—remain             unparalleled.  This is a TEMPORARY setback.”

Long-term investments in climate-resilient infrastructure to mitigate future weather-related disruptions.  Let’s plan better.  We know more severe and more regular floods will occur.  Build further away from flood-lines and     implement alternative energy, adequate fresh water storage, etc.

We must act decisively to protect jobs (when you submit insurance claims, please ensure you keep paying your staff as much as possible—loss of business for you is loss of a livelihood for them),

Support our entrepreneurs—buy everything you can local!  This is now more important than ever.  Do not let a small price difference deter you.  Let’s keep our money here.
