When dense mist descends on the western escarpment of the De Kaap Valley, travellers could find themselves absolutely alone, without being able to distinguish anything around them. It is, therefore, no wonder that the Swazi warriors stationed on the escarpment in the past to guard the area against the Sotho, referred to the place as ‘yodwa’, meaning ‘where you are alone’. When the first sheep farmers arrived on the scene, they misunderstood the word ‘yodwa’ as ‘godwa’ and named the mountain Godwan Contour Plaat.
