More than half of young people in Sub-Saharan Africa, who make up the largest part of the population, are born into poverty, growing up in communities that offer no hope. Most have no ethical role-models nor do they believe that they have purpose or equal value to others.
In response to this problem, and consumed by a vision of young Africans living purpose-filled lives and leading Africa into its full social and economic potential, gold-youth was founded in 2004. The name gold means “generation of leaders discovered”. We see gold in every young person no matter what their circumstances. We believe that Africaʼs greatest resource is its young people. gold-youth’s primary focus was to test and scale the methodology of youth peer education where positive peer pressure is structured to bring about sustained community change through an “each-one-reach-one” approach. In 2011, gold-enterprises (legally registered as gold Consulting) was started as an innovative, for-profit social enterprise (Pty) Ltd. gold-youth is 100% owner of gold-enterprises.
gold-enterprises is a strategy of gold-youth to have a long-term, sustainable profit centre that contributes towards the work of gold-youth and serves as a vehicle which could in time become the biggest employer and placement vehicle of the gold Grads pipeline (alumni).
