Draft Water Regulations restricting public access to state dams!!
The Dept of Water and Sanitation has published draft regulations that seek to replace laws dating back to 1964. While the Dept aims to modernise safety, protect the environment, and ensure more equitable public access, the proposed ‘fine print’ has raised serious alarms across the country.
Critics argue the regulations create an unbankable environment for property owners by capping leases at under 10 years, and effectively criminalise traditional recreational activities, like fishing and boating—that are currently protected under the National Water Act.
Whether you are a landowner adjacent to a dam, a weekend angler, or a citizen concerned about local tourism economies, your voice is essential to ensure a balanced and fair outcome.
Dear South Africa has already formally requested an extension to the 13 April deadline to allow for more meaningful participation, but we cannot wait. We must act now to ensure the record reflects public sentiment.
