Literature on Calvinist church architecture in South Africa is limited. Most of it deals with interior planning; little is said about outer appearance or style. One looks in vain for a systematic examination of the styles in which pre-modern Calvinist churches in South Africa were built, styles that ranged from Baroque to Byzantine. Indeed, no church architecture in South Africa other than the Calvinist one went through such a variety of styles.
