iCal

17 November 2019

7:00 am

Bushwhacked and Barberton would like to invite you to an event in Barberton, which should appeal to all outdoors people(all welcome) , but focused on the guiding community. We would like to set up a yearly venue for guides and their families to meet each other, exchange experiences and knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere, with a few activities to participate in. To show you this beautiful area, with some of the oldest rocks in the world to be seen on the recently proclaimed World Heritage site GeoTrail, to look around some of our museums, showing Barberton’s rich geological and Gold Rush and mining history. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick lived, worked and wrote in Barberton, a statue to commemorate Jock of the Bushveld stands in the town centre and many other activities.

Don’t forget Movember  which is a annual event where men grow their moustache for the whole of November and was started to raise awareness of men’s health.

The Barberton Golf course (2nd oldest in South Africa) will be the base/go to point for Khaki Feva. The hill on the right is one tree hill where weather permitting we will spend Friday night.

Barberton is in the foot hills of the the Makhonjwa mountains, dating back 3.6 billion years, comprise the oldest, best-preserved sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks on Earth.  Known geologically as the Barberton Greenstone Belt, the physical and chemical characteristics of these highly accessible, ancient exposures provide an unparalleled source of scientific information about the early Earth. The outstanding value of these rocks lies not only in their excellent preservation but also in the large number of sites and features that, when combined, provide a unique, and as yet only partially explored, scientific resource. As required by the World Heritage Convention, they are ‘the best of the best’ examples of this form of ancient (Archaean) geology.  There are few places on earth where rocks of the Archaean period are visible, but in Barberton the history of our planet, set in stone, can be seen along the world class GEO-TRAIL (a 37 km scenic, self-drive route between Barberton and Swaziland) from your car, on a scenic tarred road!  See link below for some amazing footage.
